With our current medical knowledge we are unable to completely eliminate opioids in the treatment of severe, intractable, chronic pain for some patients, but we can and should eliminate ineffective pain management and over-reliance on opioids whenever possible.
Ineffective pain management occurs when there is no measurable increase in, or preservation of functionality. In other words, we have failed if the patient still can’t get off the couch, perform routine activities of daily living with greater ease, raise children, enjoy an active hobby in retirement, volunteer in the community, or return to work, for example.
Over-reliance on opioids occurs when patients are given opioids in lieu of treatments that would be more effective, or if patients are given opioids exclusively, when multimodal treatment would have a more beneficial effect. We encourage all of our patients to adopt a multi-pronged approach in the management of their chronic pain which includes the 8 tenets of the Stop Pain Scale and interventional and/or surgical treatments as needed.
At Fireweed Health Care we are committed to providing effective pain management without over-reliance on opioids, and encourage patients to use all of the treatments necessary to help get their life back on track.
